Our farm has been in our family for nearly 200 years and we love working to preserve it and provide you with the highest quality fruits and vegetables. In 1998 Shelly and her husband, a farm boy too, decided to grow sweet corn like Paul did as a teenager. Our first customers found our corn in a bathtub in our corncrib turned garage with a peanut butter money jar for self-service. That first year we sold over 500 dozen. In 2003 we expanded to include Mitchell’s farm—our U-Pick raspberry farm. In the following spring we planted more than 2500 raspberries by hand on almost 3 acres. We planted Mac Black and Jewell which are our black varieties. The black varieties were planted in plastic covered beds to decrease our use of chemical weed control. Between the rows are eight foot grass covered aisles. Drip irrigation is installed beneath the beds and used to provide adequate water and nutrients to the berries. In the spring of 2007 our 16 year old son Jake added his own 2 acre patch of black raspberries and Shelly added some purple and fall golds just to spice it up a bit. Depending on the spring weather conditions our black raspberries will begin to ripen the last week of June thru mid-July. Caroline, our fall red variety peaks in early-September through frost. Our berries make wonderful desserts, wine or are great right off the bramble. The Detwilers also grow sweet corn, pumpkins, gourds, red peppers, edamame soybeans and green beans. Our extended family continues growing commodity crops such as corn, soybeans and wheat. We love sharing with others where food comes from and our agricultural roots. We will continue to provide premium home-grown local produce. Celebrate the abundance of American agriculture at Mitchell’s Farm and come taste the difference.
